This 'diva' sized scrunchie is an acknowledgment to my Samoan heritage and my Grandma's last name, Ama.
Dad's Mum passed away when he was young, sadly I never got to meet her. I always try and imagine what she was like between the stories I hear from Dad, my Aunties and Uncles, along with the values that Dad and his 5 siblings show.
Dad was born in NZ because of her bravery. She came out with her Fijian husband and their first child to Blenheim, even though it wasn't the most common region for Pasifika people to settle in.
Coming to a new country to have 5 more children where you spoke no English, and it was starkly different to village life in Lotofaga, Samoa would have been hugely challenging and surreal...
Here's to you Ane Ama, and the many other courageous and brave women to come!
100% silky viscose.
