This beautiful cotton and linen mix fabric reminds me the most of Samoa. The bright red is seen so much in lavalava or puletasi, as well as Samoan the traditional 'ulafala necklace, worn by men. The clear tropical sky is represented by the light blue.
In 2012 I went to Samoa for six months. Visiting my fanau and my village, while also being able to travel around and even work.
While living there I got my first tatau at Sulu'ape, one of the most renowned in Samoa, and the last two have been by the talented Tyla Vaeau in Auckland. My three tatau represent my fanau, testing journeys, growth, the importance of feeling connected to my roots and knowing where I've come from. I wear these tatau proudly!
When you wear this scrunchie I hope you think of your family, your foundation, your roots and your turangawaewae, the place where you feel empowered and connected!
